マサは救おうとせず、父親の代わりにもならない。ただ、去らずに居続ける
家庭の息苦しさの中にいるレンは、その沈黙と距離の中に身を置いていく。
母や祖母の孤独も交差する中で、関係は説明されないまま積み重なっていく。
これは家族になる物語ではない。
「父」とも「他人」とも言い切れない場所に生まれる、制度の外の親密さを見つめる物語。

They meet almost by chance, make no promises, and never give their relationship a name.

YOFU quietly places this bond—neither bound by blood nor protected by social definition—within the silence and texture of everyday life.

この作品では、「正しさ」や「感動」を描くことよりも、制度と感情のあいだに生じる、説明しきれない距離に目を向けました。
誰かの人生に関わってしまったとき、人は何を引き受け、何を引き受けないのか。
その判断は、言葉になる前に、すでに生活の中に現れていると感じています。
映画『養父』は、説明や象徴、感情誘導を極力排し、沈黙や間、生活の断片を通して、
その問いだけを残すことを目指しました。
Kazuhiro Teranishi made his directorial debut with a film presented at the Tokyo International Film Festival and the Shanghai International Film Festival.
His works have also been presented internationally, including at the Montreal World Film Festival, and one received the Grand Prize at the Monaco International Film Festival.
His films explore human relationships beyond social definitions.
YOFU continues this exploration.

「Stay with me」は、主演の寺西優真が本作の為に書き下ろした“去らなかった人”の視点から描かれた静かなラブソング。強い言葉も、約束もない。ただ、そこに居続けるという選択ー。英語タイトルでありながら、その本質は日本的な“余白”と“沈黙”にある。
派手なサビではなく、呼吸のように繰り返されるフレーズ。

それは帰る場所を失いかけた誰かへの言葉でもある。感情を煽らず、説明せず、ただ“存在する”。血縁でも制度でもない関係を描く本作と、本楽曲は深く呼応し物語の核心に寄り添う主題歌です。
“Stay with me” is a quiet love song written for this film by its lead actor, Yuma Teranishi, from the perspective of “the one who did not leave.”
There are no strong declarations, no promises.
Only the choice to remain.
Though the title is in English, its essence lies in a distinctly Japanese sense of silence and space.
Rather than building toward a dramatic refrain, the phrase returns like breathing.

It can also be heard as words spoken to someone on the verge of losing the place they return to.
Without stirring emotion or explaining too much, it simply remains there.
As the theme song of YOFU, it quietly accompanies the heart of a story about a bond shaped by neither blood nor institution.

最初に脚本を読んだとき、あまりにも説明が少なくて驚きました。
映画やドラマの主人公は、もっと分かりやすく書かれていることが多いと思います。
でもマサは、何を考えているのか、どういう人なのかを簡単には言い切れない。だからこそ、どう演じるかというより、どう“そこにいるか”が大事な役だと感じました。
寺西監督は、普通なら主役になれないような人を、あえて主人公として描いている気がします。何かを成し遂げる人ではなく、強い言葉で誰かを動かす人でもない。
でも、そういう人の時間や存在を静かに真ん中に置いた映画は、僕自身あまり見たことがありませんでした。
撮影では、何かを強く伝えるというより、言葉にならないものをどこまで残せるかをずっと考えていました。
マサは優しい人、と簡単には言い切れないし、器用な人でもない。
それでも、去らずにそこにいた時間が、この作品の中に静かに残っていればいいなと思っています。
今回、主題歌「Stay with me」も作らせていただきました。
歌もまた、この映画の時間や感情をそっと支えるものになっていたら嬉しいです。
Yuma Teranishi as Masa
When I first read the script, I was surprised by how little was explained.
In many films and dramas, the main character is written in a much more direct way.
But Masa is not that kind of character. You cannot easily define what he thinks or even who he is. That is why I felt the role was not about how to “perform” him, but how to simply “be there” as him.
I feel that Director Teranishi chose to place at the center someone who would not normally become the protagonist.
Masa is not a person who achieves something grand, nor someone who moves others with strong words.
And yet, this film quietly places such a person’s time and presence at its center. I had rarely seen a film like that before.
During filming, I kept thinking not about expressing things strongly, but about how much could be left unspoken.
Masa is not someone you can easily describe as simply kind, nor is he a skillful person.
Still, I hope the time he spent there without leaving remains quietly within the film.
I also created the theme song, “Stay with me.”
I would be happy if the song, too, could gently support the time and emotions that live inside this film.

『SPELL』につづき、本作『養父』で再タッグ。
言葉で説明されない関係を、ふたりが静かに立ち上げる。
『養父』で泉ピン子が演じるのは、レンの祖母。
寺西優真演じるマサとの間に多くの言葉はありませんが、その視線や距離、そこにいる時間の積み重ねによって、この映画の奥行きが静かに形づくられていきます。
『SPELL』で培われた信頼関係を土台に、ふたりは本作で、血縁や制度では言い切れない関係の気配を、強く残るかたちで画面に刻みました。

In YOFU, Pinko Izumi plays Ren’s grandmother.
There are not many words exchanged between her and Masa, played by Yuma Teranishi, yet through their glances, their distance, and the accumulation of time they share on screen, the emotional depth of the film slowly takes shape.
Built on the trust they developed through SPELL, the two actors leave a powerful impression of a relationship that cannot be fully defined by blood or by social roles.
